Are you planning a summer road trip? School’s out and with the sunny weather, blue skies, and open roads, there’s no better time to take a summer vacation.

Whether you’re driving a short distance or planning a major road trip, it’s incredibly important to ensure your car is in tip-top shape to keep you safe.

At Bellamy Strickland, we have the best tips for keeping your vehicle maintained, so you can avoid a potential problem on your summer road trip. Check out our tips for checking your vehicle before summer vacation.

Check your Battery: Having your car not start can make your road trip take a quick turn for the worse. Check your vehicle’s battery to ensure it is strong prior to hopping on the road.
Inspect your tires: Take a close look at your tires and look for any tears or bulges. Not only will you want to ensure your tires have enough air, you’ll want to make sure your tires have a good amount of tread left. One quick trick for measuring your tire’s tread is to hold a quarter upside down in the tread. If the top of George Washington’s head is visible, you may need new tires.
Brakes: Pay attention to the condition of your brakes to see if you notice any changes in behavior like squeaking, requiring more pressure, or vibrating. You may need your local auto professional to give your brakes a tune up or replace your brake fluid.
Top off your Fluids: Before a big road trip, it’s always a good idea to replace your vehicle’s fluids. Everything from oil to antifreeze, windshield fluid, and brake fluid should be topped off. This will ensure your car is in tip top shape.
Replace any Worn Filters: When was the last time you checked the filters on your car? Have a local professional check your air, engine, fuel, and oil filters before a long trip. This will prevent your vehicle from getting overheated in the summer months.
Have an Emergency Kit on Hand: When packing for your summer road trip, it’s always a good idea to take a peek at your emergency kit. Ensure that it includes any first-aid materials, tools, a flashlight, jumper cables, and a wrench.
Check the Air Conditioning: There’s nothing worse than getting caught off guard without your air conditioning working. If your A/C system isn’t working, have a professional take a look to see what’s up.
Check the Lights: Everything electrical should be inspected before you hit the road. Make sure all your headlights, brake lights and blinkers are working properly, in addition to windshield wipers, power locks, and more.
Your Vehicle’s Capacity: Before loading up the car, check your vehicle’s capacity to pack within the recommended amount. Not only will you avoid potential breakdowns, you’ll save on gas, too.
Spare Tire & Jack: Is there anything worse than having a flat tire? Not having a spare tire could make your situation worse. Make sure your spare is properly inflated and your jack is not defective.
