How to Check Coolant Levels

Have you ever wondered, “What is coolant?” Coolant is an automotive fluid that transfers heat and regulates your engine’s temperature and its components. Whether you drive a new Buick Encore or GMC Sierra, having the right amount of engine coolant is vital to move you forward on Mcdonough streets. Engine coolant includes an additive that keeps it from freezing below 32 degrees and overheating above 212 degrees Fahrenheit. What to Look For When Checking Coolant

Now that we’ve answered the question, “What is coolant?” let’s discuss how to check it. You don’t need to open the radiator cap to check coolant levels. Instead, you can check the markings on the side of the reservoir. If the liquid is at the “full” line, you can continue on your Mcdonough drives. If it doesn’t reach the full mark, remove the radiator cap and add the coolant or a 50/50 mix of coolant/water until it’s full. Read the bottle to see if it’s premixed or if you need to do it. You should also inspect the hoses connected to the radiator while you’re at it to look for any leaks. 

Note: If you add more fluid to the cooling system, be sure the engine has cooled down completely! Also, never open the radiator cap while the engine is hot!

When to See a Service Technician 

Your Chevy Cruze coolant, or any other model, should appear thinner than motor oil but thicker than water. If you notice your coolant looking sludgy or thick, schedule service as soon as possible because your car may have an internal gasket leak. You can still drive it around Griffin, but a leaking gasket will quickly drain your coolant and put your engine at risk of overheating, which can cause severe damage. 

When to Change Coolant

The Bellamy Strickland Chevrolet service center recommends checking the coolant level and appearance every three to six months. The liquid should be blue, green, yellow, or red, never brownish or colorless. If it looks brown or translucent, it’s time to flush the system and replace the coolant.
