How to Check Transmission Fluid

Transmission Fluid Change

Knowing how to check the transmission fluid on your car is crucial. Regularly checking it may help prevent serious maintenance issues from arising. If you don’t know how to check transmission fluid or how often to check your transmission fluid, Bellamy Strickland Chevrolet Buick GMC wants to help! Read on to learn how to check transmission fluid, and if your car needs service, schedule an appointment today!.

Step by Step Guide for Checking Transmission Fluid

This is the process for how to check transmission fluid:

  1. Turn the engine on for a few minutes before you check it because your engine should be warmed up properly before you proceed.
  2. Set your park brake and open the hood.
  3. Locate your transmission fluid dipstick. On front-wheel-drive vehicles, it’s usually to the right of the oil dipstick. You can always check your owner’s manual if you can’t find it.
  4. Remove the dipstick and touch the transmission fluid, moving it around between your thumb and finger. The transmission fluid should be almost clear with a pink hue. If it looks dirty or smells bad, take it to the Bellamy Strickland Chevrolet Buick GMC service center for transmission fluid replacement.
  5. Use a rag to wipe off your dipstick and insert it back into your car. Pull it out again and check the transmission fluid level. If it’s under the “Full” mark, you’ll need to add more a little at a time.
  6. Use a funnel to pour the new fluid in until you reach the proper level, and be careful not to overfill it.

Checking the Fluid in a Sealed Transmission

If you can’t find a dipstick under the hood, your car is likely equipped with a sealed transmission. If you’re wondering, “What is a sealed transmission?” you’re not alone around Forsyth. “Sealed” doesn’t mean it can’t be accessed. But it does mean there’s no dipstick to measure the transmission fluid level. If your car has a sealed transmission, do not mess with it or attempt to check the fluid level because you could cause damage. Instead, make a service appointment at Bellamy Strickland Chevrolet Buick GMC.

How Often Do You Check Your Transmission Fluid?

You should check all of the main fluid levels of your car at least once per month, including your transmission fluid, power steering fluid, and motor oil. It’s wise to consult your owner’s manual for more specific maintenance recommendations.
